Shri Krishna's Answers To Uddhava

1.        Of how many kinds of Yama?
Non-injury, truthfulness, non-stealing, non-attachment, shame, non-accumulation of wealth, faith in God, chastity, silence, patience, forgiveness and fearlessness.

2.        Of how many kinds is Niyama?
Purity of mind and body, repetition of the Lord's name, austerity, offering of oblations, faith in one's self, hospitality, worship of ME, visiting of holy places where saints live working for the good of others, contentment and service unto a true Guru and not deceptive preachers.

3.       What is calmness?
Steady attachment of the mind of ME.

4.       What is self-control?
Control of the sense-organs.

5.       What is fortitude?
Bearing of grief caused by our ignorance and arrogance.

6.       What is patience?
Perfect control over the palate and sex-impulse.

7.       What is charity?
Relinquishing of the idea of violence towards beings.

8.       What is penance?
Giving up desires that destroy us.

9.       What is valor?
Conquest of one's nature.

10.    What is honesty?
Looking upon everything with an equal eye.

11.    What is truthfulness?
True and agreeable speech which the sages praise, not the worldly wise.

12.    What is renunciation?
Giving up of selfish works.

13.    What is the wealth worth coveting?
Religion of Spirituality.

14.    What is sacrifice?
Even after sacrificing the entire life, not to feel that we have done anything great.

15.    What is religious renumeration?
The imparting of knowledge to the deserving.

16.    What is the strength of a man?
Control of Prana.

17.    What is fortune?
Divine state.

18.    What is profit?
Devotion to the Lord.

19.    What is learning?
Destruction of the idea of multiplicity in the Self.

20.    What is shyness?
Abhorrence of evil deeds. It is not covering the face as the worldly think.

21.    What is the highest beauty?
Virtues such as a spirit of independence.

22.    What is happiness?
Transcending pleasure and pain.

23.    What is misery?
The hankering after sense-pleasures.

24.    Who is a scholar?
One who can distinguish between bondage and liberation and cling to Truth.

25.    Who is a fool?
One who identifies oneself with the body, etc.

26.    What is the right way?
That which leads to God.

27.    What is the wrong way?
That which causes disturbance of the mind.

28.    What is heaven?
Rise of Sattva (purity) in the mind.

29.    What is hell?
Rise of Tamas (impurity) in the mind.

30.    Who is a friend?
The Guru in the form of God.

31.    What is a house?
The human body.

32.    Who is rich?
One who is rich in Divine virtues.

33.    Who is poor?
One who is discontented.

34.    Who is mean?
One who is not a master of his senses.

35.    Who is Lordly?
One who is not attached to sense-objects.
